California Privacy Notice (CCPA/CPRA)

This California Privacy Notice ("Notice") supplements the information contained in the Privacy Policyof Give Me A Lawyer ("we," "us," or "our") and applies solely to all visitors, users, and others who reside in the State of California ("consumers" or "you"). We adopt this notice to comply with the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 ("CCPA") as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act of 2024 ("CPRA").
Any terms defined in the CCPA/CPRA have the same meaning when used in this Notice. Give Me A Lawyer operates as a legal directory and advertising platform; it is not a lawyer referral service as defined under ABA Model Rule 7.2 or corresponding state bar rules.
1. Notice at Collection
At or before the time of collection, you have a right to know the categories of personal information we collect, the purposes for which those categories are used, and how long we retain that information.
We collect personal information to provide a directory of legal professionals, manage subscriptions (Free, Pro, Verified, Featured), and facilitate advertising. We do not "sell" personal information for monetary consideration in the traditional sense, but we may "share" information for cross-context behavioral advertising purposes. We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Notice or as required by law.
2. Categories of Personal Information Collected
In the preceding 12 months, Give Me A Lawyer has collected the following categories of personal information (PI) as defined by Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.140(v)(1):
Category A: Identifiers. Real name, alias, postal address, unique personal identifier, online identifier, Internet Protocol address, email address, account name, or other similar identifiers.
Category B: Personal information categories listed in the California Customer Records statute (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.80(e)). Name, signature, address, telephone number, education, employment, employment history, credit card number, debit card number, or any other financial information. (Note: Some information in this category may overlap with other categories).
Category C: Protected classification characteristics under California or federal law. Age (40 years or older), gender. [REVIEW: Confirm if any additional demographic data is collected via voluntary attorney profiles].
Category D: Commercial information. Records of personal property, products or services purchased, obtained, or considered, or other purchasing or consuming histories or tendencies (e.g., subscription levels like Pro, Verified, or Featured).
Category F: Internet or other similar network activity.Browsing history, search history, information on a consumer's interaction with a website, application, or advertisement.
Category G: Geolocation data. Physical location or movements (limited to city/state/zip code provided by the user or derived from IP address).
Category I: Professional or employment-related information. Current or past job history, bar admission status, areas of practice, and firm affiliation.
Category K: Inferences drawn from other personal information.Profile reflecting a person's preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes (e.g., predicted interest in specific legal practice areas).
Category L: Sensitive Personal Information. Account log-in combined with password allowing access to an account, and precise geolocation [REVIEW: Verify if precise GPS data is collected or only general IP-based location].
3. Sources of Personal Information
We obtain the categories of personal information listed above from the following categories of sources:
- Directly from you: For example, from forms you complete on our website, subscription sign-ups (Free, Pro at $2.99/mo, Verified at $19.99/mo, or Featured at $149/mo), or when you create an attorney profile.
- Indirectly from you: For example, through observing your actions on our website via cookies and other tracking technologies.
- Public Records: We may pull information from state bar associations or public licensing databases to populate or verify directory listings.
- Third-Party Service Providers: Such as payment processors (for subscriptions) and analytics providers.
4. Business and Commercial Purposes for Use
We may use or disclose the personal information we collect for one or more of the following purposes:
- To fulfill the reason you provided the information:If you provide PI to create a profile, we use that to list you in our directory. If you provide financial info for a "Featured" subscription, we use it to process payment.
- To provide, support, and develop our Website: Including internal research for technological development and demonstration.
- To create and manage your account: Verifying your identity and professional credentials.
- Advertising and Marketing: To personalize your experience and deliver content and product offerings relevant to your interests, including targeted offers and ads through our website and third-party sites.
- Security: To maintain the safety, security, and integrity of our Website, databases, and other technology assets and business.
- Legal Obligations: To respond to law enforcement requests and as required by applicable law, court order, or governmental regulations.
- Operational Purposes: Auditing related to counting ad impressions, verifying quality and safety of the service, and detecting security incidents.
5. Disclosure of Personal Information to Third Parties
In the preceding 12 months, Give Me A Lawyer has disclosed the following categories of personal information for a business purpose:
- Identifiers: Disclosed to service providers (cloud hosting, email delivery) and payment processors.
- Commercial Information: Disclosed to payment processors and accounting software providers.
- Internet Activity: Disclosed to data analytics providers and advertising networks.
We disclose your personal information for a business purpose to the following categories of third parties:
- Service providers (e.g., Stripe for payments, AWS for hosting).
- Data aggregators.
- Third parties to whom you authorize us to disclose your personal information in connection with products or services we provide to you.
6. Sale or Sharing of Personal Information
Under the CPRA, "sharing" is defined as the disclosure of personal information to a third party for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Sale of Information: Give Me A Lawyer does not sell your personal information for monetary compensation. We do not sell the names or contact information of lawyers or consumers to third-party telemarketers.
Sharing for Cross-Context Behavioral Advertising:We may "share" Identifiers (like IP addresses or cookie IDs) and Internet Activity with advertising networks to show you ads that are relevant to your interests on other websites.
Categories Shared in the Last 12 Months: Identifiers, Internet or other similar network activity.
Categories of Third Parties Shared With: Advertising networks and social media platforms.
We do not have actual knowledge that we sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16 years of age.
7. Your Rights Under the CCPA/CPRA
As a California resident, you have specific rights regarding your personal information:
A. Right to Know and Access
You have the right to request that we disclose certain information to you about our collection and use of your personal information over the past 12 months. Once we receive and verify your request, we will disclose to you:
- The categories of personal information we collected about you.
- The categories of sources for the personal information we collected about you.
- Our business or commercial purpose for collecting, selling, or sharing that personal information.
- The categories of third parties with whom we disclose that personal information.
- The specific pieces of personal information we collected about you (also called a data portability request).
If we sold or shared your personal information, two separate lists disclosing:
- Sales, identifying the personal information categories that each category of recipient purchased; and
- Shared, identifying the personal information categories that each category of recipient received.
B. Right to Delete
You have the right to request that we delete any of your personal information that we collected from you and retained, subject to certain exceptions. We may deny your deletion request if retaining the information is necessary for us or our service provider(s) to:
- Complete the transaction for which we collected the personal information.
- Detect security incidents, protect against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity.
- Debug products to identify and repair errors.
- Comply with the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (Cal. Penal Code § 1546 et. seq.).
- Comply with a legal obligation.
C. Right to Correct
You have the right to request that we correct inaccurate personal information that we maintain about you, taking into account the nature of the personal information and the purposes of the processing.
D. Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information
You have the right to direct us to limit our use of your sensitive personal information to that use which is necessary to perform the services reasonably expected by an average consumer. 8. How to Exercise Your Rights
To exercise the rights described above, please submit a verifiable consumer request to us by either:

Only you, or a person registered with the California Secretary of State that you authorize to act on your behalf, may make a verifiable consumer request related to your personal information.
You may only make a verifiable consumer request for access or data portability twice within a 12-month period. The verifiable consumer request must:
- Provide sufficient information that allows us to reasonably verify you are the person about whom we collected personal information or an authorized representative.
- Describe your request with sufficient detail that allows us to properly understand, evaluate, and respond to it.
9. Verification Process
Upon receiving a request to know, delete, or correct, we must verify your identity before processing the request. We will match the identifying information provided by you to the personal information already maintained by us.
- Logged-in Users: If you have a password-protected account, we may verify your identity through the existing authentication practices for your account.
- Non-Account Holders: We will ask you to provide at least two or three pieces of personal information (such as your email address and the last four digits of the card used for your subscription) to match against our records.
If we cannot verify your identity from the information already maintained by us, we may request additional information, which shall only be used for the purposes of verifying your identity and for security or fraud-prevention.
10. Authorized Agents
If you use an authorized agent to submit a request, we may require that you:
- Provide the authorized agent signed permission to do so.
- Verify your own identity directly with us.
- Directly confirm with us that you provided the authorized agent permission to submit the request.
This section does not apply if you have provided the authorized agent with power of attorney pursuant to Probate Code sections 4000 to 4465.
11. Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing
You have the right to direct us to not sell or share your personal information at any time (the "Right to Opt-Out").
Global Privacy Control (GPC):Our website is configured to recognize and honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. If your browser or device sends a GPC signal, we will automatically treat that as a request to opt-out of the "sharing" of your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising for that browser or device.

12. Right to Non-Discrimination
We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA/CPRA rights. Unless permitted by the CCPA/CPRA, we will not:
- Deny you goods or services.
- Charge you different prices or rates for goods or services, including through granting discounts or other benefits, or imposing penalties.
- Provide you a different level or quality of goods or services.
- Suggest that you may receive a different price or rate for goods or services or a different level or quality of goods or services.
However, we may offer you certain financial incentives permitted by the CCPA/CPRA that can result in different prices, rates, or quality levels. Any CCPA-permitted financial incentive we offer will reasonably relate to your personal information's value and contain written terms that describe the program's material aspects. 13. California "Shine the Light" Law
Under California Civil Code Section 1798.83 (the "Shine the Light" law), California residents who provide personal information in obtaining products or services for personal, family, or household use are entitled to request and obtain from us, once a calendar year, information about the customer information we shared, if any, with other businesses for their own direct marketing uses.
If applicable, this information would include the categories of customer information and the names and addresses of those businesses with which we shared customer information for the immediately prior calendar year.
